Rufus Bordal, 16, has been a winner in numerous piano competitions, garnering 1st place finishes in the Los Angeles Young Musicians International Competition, in the Glendale Piano competition, in the Kathryn Gawartin Chopin Piano competition, in the third and final round of the Southern California Junior Bach Festival, in the Alice Frazier Kitchen Memorial Scholarship competition (twice), and in many others. In addition, Rufus has performed as concerto soloist with the Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra, with the Southwestern Youth Music Festival Orchestra, with the Bellflower Symphony Orchestra, with the Palisades Symphony, and twice with the Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra. Rufus also plays cello in the Samohi Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, and has received numerous scholarship awards in both piano and cello from various organizations, including the Linda Smith Scholarship from the Westside Committee of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and multiple awards from the Young Musicians Foundation. Rufus has studied piano since 2011 with Anders Martinson, following earlier studies with Stephen Calipari.
Young Artist Competition for 2024-25 now open
The Competition now features a Junior Division and an Open Division. We are excited to offer these opportunities for talented young musicians to demonstrate their skill and artistry through the audition process, and for each winner, a cash prize and a performance as soloist with the Pasadena Community Orchestra.
