The winner of the 2021 Young Artist Competition violinist Boxianzi (Vivian) Ling. She will perform the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Camille Saint-Saëns at our March 17, 2023 concert.
Born in Hunan, China, accomplished violinist Boxianzi Ling was accepted into the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with full scholarships at the age of 14 – the youngest student the Conservatory has ever accepted. She has soloed with many prestigious groups such as the San Francisco Ballet Symphony, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphony Parnassus, Camellia Symphony Orchestra, and the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra. Boxianzi made her professional debut with the San Francisco Ballet, performing the Prokofiev Violin Concerto under Maestro Martin West in a series of five concerts.
In November 2019, she won the sub audition for the San Francisco Symphony while she was a junior at the San Francisco Conservatory. She has performed under Directors Michael Tilson Thomas and Esa Pekka Salonen, and continues to perform as a substitute for the Symphony in addition to the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra. Boxianzi is currently pursuing a graduate degree at the New England Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Donald Weilerstein.
About the Young Artist Competition
The Young Artist Competition of the Pasadena Community Orchestra has been promoting and providing solo performance opportunities for young instrumental artists since 1986. Each year, the winner of the competition has the opportunity to play a concerto with the Orchestra during its upcoming season, as well as receiving a cash prize of $500. Several previous competitors and winners have gone on to prestigious music schools and careers in music performance.
